Hello! My name is Jonah, I am 24 and I teach music online. I have been playing the guitar and writing music since the age of 10 and have a BA first-class Honours degree in Popular Music from Edinburgh Napier University. I have taught guitar privately for four years, taught music technology at Edinburgh Napier University for one year, and spent a year as a classroom assistant in the Stromness Academy music department. I play in the Edinburgh-based band the Motion Poets and have ten years of performance experience that guides both my guitar playing and compositional practice. I was the 2018 winner of the Clan Currie Composition Scholarship award and have had compositions performed by ensembles in New York and New Jersey.
Whether an absolute beginner or an advanced player needing some guidance to move your playing forward I can assist you. My goal is to make lessons a relaxed, fun, and enjoyable environment where you can learn at a pace that you feel comfortable with. Lessons are tailored to your goals and the artists, genres, and styles you are most interested in. As well as musical repertoire lessons cover a wide range of individual techniques, theory (such as scale/mode and harmony/chord knowledge), and invaluable practice skills. Through these tools, I can guide you in composing your own music and developing your musical voice. In addition, I can help you to develop a strong overall technique and form, essential to building a long relationship with musical performance without injury or strain.
In addition, notes on each lesson and all materials used are placed into an easily accessible online folder. This means that no student is left wondering what was covered at the start of the lesson if they happen to forget halfway through the week or how that scale shape was played when paper copies go missing!
