About

I'm a musician who plays both cello and double bass, I graduated from the University of North Texas in 2005 with a degree in Jazz Studies, and received a masters degree from University of Michigan for Improvised Music.  I've played gigs numbering in the 1000's and have performed all over the world. I've been teaching music lessons for the past 8 years and started my own string program "Independent Strings" in 2016 to help string players learn how to improvise over songs.

I like to get to know where my students are at as a musician, learn what their goals are and where their strengths are. Then I do my best to find relevant challenges that help them reach their goals, and encourage them through the process of getting better.

For jazz I recommend a fake book of some kind. "The Real Book" is a good fakebook to start out with. For classical cello, I do use the Suzuki Method Books a lot. I also work often with the Bach Cello Suites. For folk music and pop music I transcribe the song for the student, and work with them on how to play it.
