Joseph Dundore, Jr.
About
Mr. Dundore is a graduate from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a Masters in the Art of Teaching – Music, and the acclaimed Berklee College of Music, with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Professional Music, Magna Cum Laude.
In addition to his education, Mr. D. is the director of the JoeyDCares Rock Orchestra, a group who performs concerts for charity. This group has worked with many including JDRF, The Wounded Warrior Project, MS, the Nathan Chris Baker Foundation, Carroll County Special Olympics and local charities. This group has raised over $40,000 in charity since its inception in the fall of 2010.
For the past 14 years Mr. Dundore has been teaching in the Carroll County Public School system in various functions.
Mr. Dundore has been nominated as one of Carroll County’s “Outstanding Teachers” multiple times.

Teaching Style
My teaching style is to get my students involved in their learning. A balance of teaching students to find things out for themselves and at the same time guiding them when needed. I teach my students to be independent learners so they take ownership in what they are learning. Student ownership brings longer retention of the learned material.
I want my students to have fun while learning a variety of material so that they become well rounded musicians. I want my students to know that I am interested in their personal and musical goals, and helping to achieve them. My passion for teaching helps motivate students to learn and enjoy playing their instrument.

Students first learn fingerings, positions, notes and rhythms and apply it to music. As students progress we learn all properties of music such as tempo, dynamics, quality of sound, timbre, melody, harmony, scales etc. I like students to use a variety of materials including a method book, spiral staff book for theory, a fun book (examples are Disney Favorites, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Pop and Rock Books etc.) or a Jazz and/or Classical Book (omnibook, jazz solos, caprices, solos) depending on ability and age of student.
I teach students how to get the best time out of their practice sessions. Practicing is more than playing the notes on the page. It is about learning what your strengths and weaknesses are and improving on them. Setting goals is also important, where are you now? where would you like to be by...[date]
Other elements of my curriculum are:
- Working on posture, physical technique, breathing, embochure.
- Learning to listen to music and analyze.
- Give regular evaluations of progress and learning

Joey Dundore, Jr. (Joey D.) is a graduate from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a Masters in the Art of Teaching – Music, and the acclaimed Berklee College of Music, with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Professional Music, Magna Cum Laude. Main concentrated areas of study were composition and saxophone, flute, and clarinet performance. He has studied under the instruction of Fred Lipsius (Blood, Sweat and Tears), Dino Govoni, Shannon LeClaire, NYC Jazz innovator George Garzone, Boston Symphony Flutist Wendy Rolfe, and Lancaster’s own Dave Wilson and Tom Strohman.
In addition to his education, Joey D. has extensive volunteering experience, including sole director of a Benefit Concert in 2002, which raised Money for The Victims of September 11th Tragedies selling self produced and written music, CDs, T-shirts, Posters, and Video Tapes. Proceeds went to the Women and Children of NYC Firefighters Fund. His first big event for his non-profit JoeyDCares, entitled, JoeyDCares.org Presents: HOPE. A Benefit Concert for the American Cancer Society, took place on June 5th, 2009, and was a huge success!
His performance experience includes auditioning for the NBC show, “America’s Got Talent!” in 2008, in which he received an all expense paid trip to Las Vegas to participate in the show, and appeared in local newspapers. He was featured in a television interview with FOX45 news for performing at the Canton, MD Wine and Jazz Festival in 2009. In June of 2009, he was the winner of the Ephrata Performing Arts Center’s Got Talent.
Supplemental performance experience includes a tour of Europe with American Music Abroad, visiting France, Belgium, Germany and Austria. He seated 1st Chair Alto Saxophone and had his own solo song, the first time in the tour’s history. He participated extensively with the Dave Wilson Trio, Dave Wilson’s Young Sounds, the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz Youth Band (as opening act for Ramsey Lewis from Earth, Wind and Fire), the Erin Walker Trio, the Bainbridge Band, and groups of his own. His theatre experience includes performing in the Dutch Apple Dinner Theater’s production of “Grease”, and the Ephrata Performing Arts Center’s production of “Annie Get Your Gun”.
Mr. Dundore has taught individual instruction since 2002, including advanced saxophone, flute, and clarinet, and beginner percussion, trumpet and piano.
Since 2005 Mr. Dundore has been teaching in the Carroll County Public School system in various functions. During that time, he has taught:
Middle school concert band, orchestra , jazz band and general music
Elementary instrumental music including orchestra and band to 4th and 5th graders
General music to elementary students from 1st-5th grade
Special needs students, children with disabilities ages 3-21, and students who belong to the PRIDE Program K-5 (children with emotional/behavioral disabilities)
