My love of music began when I was seven years old, and I strummed a guitar for the very first time. I have never forgotten the pleasure of making a sound come alive from a musical instrument. Over the years my passion for all things musical, and my desire to infuse that passion into teaching students to love music as much as I do has only increased. My love of music led me to college where I earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies and a Master of Music in Music Education. I have been teaching guitar to all levels and ages for nearly 20 years. As a certified teacher, I am licensed K-12 and have been actively teaching in public schools for 13 years. I have recently been awarded the 2020 Harold Grinspoon Excellence in Teaching Award.
My performance career has brought me into many diverse styles and situations. I tend to gravitate towards improvised styles of music. I am versed in multiple styles of music ranging from Classical to Jazz to Bluegrass to Bossa Nova. Over the past few years, I have stepped back from performing to focus on my passion: teaching.
I have a laid-back, well-informed style of teaching. It is important to set goals and expectations for the lessons so the students know what they will be focusing on as well as working toward. Using the goals of the student, I will tailor the lessons to provided the students with the proper instruction and information to meet their goals. With all of my students, a basic set of musicianship skills will be developed. These skills include listening, imitating, music reading, scale technique, and improvisation.
