About

Hello

My Name is Joshua Allen. I am a music educator, saxophonist, pianist, songwriter and recording artist.

I graduated from Tennessee  State University with a Bachelors of Music, concentration music education. I receive my Masters of Education and Education Specialist degree from Lincoln Memorial University. I have spent the past 10 years teaching instrumental and vocal music in middle and elementary public school. Alongside music education,

I studied saxophone under professional saxophonist,  Jimmy Bowland. I  have had the opportunity to travel aboard, performing with the "Nashville Aces" at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Umbria, Italy in 2007 and even meet the great Sonny Rollins.

From 2008 to 2010 I performed saxophone within the stage band of "Alvin Moore Entertainment" stage production company and  which produced recorded stage play, "A Mother's Prayer" featuring Johnny Gill, Robin Givens, Shirley Murdock and Jermaine Crawford which has aired  numerous times on B.E.T. as well as stages in and around the southeast. From 2013 to 2016 I have been performed within the funk band,  "Function with a C", playing various weddings, corporate gathering and other social events.

Currently I am band leader and lead Saxophonist within the instrumental group "Sacred Spaces".

I find music not only something to be played and enjoyed, but a means to open my "hearing" to people and places. My desire is that all students i teach, continue to learn and be inspired by music.

My music teaching also depends on the individual student's learning style and motivation. I tend to have two primary teaching approaches when teaching students on saxophone or piano.

The  middle school age beginner student through adult can expect a very intentional and structured path for the sake of  truly reaching  their musical goal(s).  Lessons will  focus heavily on how a student approaches practice on their own and what new actions and techniques need to be practiced to produce growth. My secondary style of teaching is geared towards the younger elementary school aged beginner student .  While lessons are still very intentional, the musical  learning experience for the student is the primary focus and a missed practice will not enhance the next lesson.

Since a student will spend more time outside the lesson, practice time on one's own is a must and be guided by an honor system, meaning the student must commit to weekly practice before moving on to the next lesson. Before each lesson begins, the student will be fully aware of what they will learn and be able to play.

While I do not consider my self a counselor or life coach, I  believe that good teachers not only care and teach the subject, but they also tie all these pieces into one bigger picture. My desire is that regardless of the teaching style, all students I teach continue to learn, grow and be inspired by music.  Music has the power to  inspire creativity, empower confidence, break down barriers and build connections.  As a musician and music instructor, my hope is that any student I teach would be able to experience all of these qualities.
