About

From Las Vegas, Nevada, Joshua Camper is an active trumpeter, teacher, and arranger. He is currently completing a Master’s degree at DePaul University, studying with Esteban Batallan and Stephen Burns. In addition to being a classically trained musician, Joshua has performed and taught mariachi and jazz. As a freelance musician, Joshua has been called for a variety of performances, from the Banana Band of the Savannah Bananas baseball team, to being a substitute in professional orchestras.

Joshua taught trumpet at the prestigious Las Vegas Academy of the Arts for the 2022-2023 academic year. His students performed at the 2022 Midwest Clinic, placed highly in the Nevada All-State ensembles, and received music scholarships. Additionally, he taught a masterclass as a guest at Northern Arizona University in November 2022.

Although the time away from school, compounded with the pandemic, took away some performance opportunities, Joshua has stayed active during the last couple of summers. He was in the Prague Summer Nights Orchestra, which toured Czechia in Summer 2023. The year before, Joshua was a member of the PRISMA Orchestra and attended the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute, where he performed alongside Summit Brass.

During his undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University as a student of Jose Sibaja, Joshua helped form West End Brass. After the group’s first year together, they were invited to Berlin to study under the brass of the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2021 with the help of Continuous Motion Productions, they recorded and filmed a music video for Brass Quintet No. 2 by Nicolas Townsend, an alum of the Blair School of Music. The group will record new projects in the near future with two new members.

I focus on teaching the physical aspects of playing the trumpet. Breathing exercises, posture, embouchure, sound production, and other similar topics are what I find to be most valuable to the time that students are paying to spend with me, while other skills such as phrasing, musicality, and music reading are easier to learn individually. I encourage my students to spend plenty of time listening to recordings of the music they want to make, as countless hours of great trumpet playing is available for free on the internet. I enjoy playing for my students in lessons so they can get a quick break, but also so they can hear what professional trumpet playing sounds like in person.
