Juanjo Leyva
About
My name is Juanjo Leyva and I´m a saxophone teacher.
My music education started as a child in a local music school in my home town. I continued studying and advancing in different music schools until finishing my degree at the Conservatorio Superior “Bonifacio Gil” in Badajoz under the guidance of Vicente Contador. During my studies, I have taken classes with international renowned saxophone players such as Marie-Bernadette, Aurelia Saxophone Quartet, Diastema Saxophone Quartet, and D. Alonso, P. Iturralde.
Currently, I am a member of the Iberian Big Band in Badajoz (Spain). We have recorded a CD named: “For once in my life”. This is in collaboration with the Ensemble de Saxofones del Conservatorio Superior de Música “Bonifacio Gil”. I am also a founding member of the Saxophone Quartet SAXTREM as well as a member of the Extremadura Film Orchestra (EXFO).
In 2014, I was awarded with first prize in the National Contest of Music in Caceres. As part of my involvement with different music bands, I have participated in some recordings with the Synphonic Band and the Bery Bery Big Band. Both of these bands are from Caceres. In addition, I have participated in different music festivals such as: WOMAD (Caceres), “Musical Autumm), Iberian Street Music Festival, Modern Music Festival (Badajoz), The XXX International Jazz Fest (Badajoz), and The International Festival of Saxophone in Palmela (FISPALMEL, Portugal). Finally, I have participated in different Music seminars sponsored by community colleges in the state of Extremadura (Spain).
I started teaching as a way to share with others how much music has given to me. As part of my teaching experience, I have worked in different schools and with a variety of students such as the local Music School in Alcántara (Caceres), La Octava (Center of creative music) in Merida (Badajoz), and in the Conservatory Music School of the city of Badajoz.
I feel that in order to be a good teacher I must never stop learning. This is my philosophy for my students as well as for me. For example, I frequently participate in professional workshops. At this moment, I am taking a course in becoming an orchestra conductor.
Teaching Style
I firmly believe appreciating music is one of the best gifts one can gain through education. I have found in order to best receive this gift; it needs to be student-centered. In order for students to learn, they must be involved in their own education. They are required to have a say in what they are learning, how they learn, and demonstrate that learning.
My approach is daily work. This develops the discipline and rigor to achieving a goal. I like to use different teaching styles. I believe it is very important to take into account different students’ needs and learning styles. I also use different materials such as music scores, videos, and audios files. It is important that the student becomes aware of their own learning. Starting with and mastering classical techniques will allow the student to master other different styles.
As a music teacher, I believe students should be offered the opportunity to discover and explore their innate potential as musicians, and to increase their natural capacities through formal music instruction. For example this could include, listening to different styles of saxophone music, learning about the history of saxophone, and interacting with other musicians of different backgrounds. All of these different activities will lead to a deeper and broader knowledge of the student’s preferred musical instrument.
