About

I have performed in orchestras all over the world. I started in the UK and worked with most of UK's major Symphony, Chamber and Opera orchestras  including the BBC Symphony Orchestra (with frequent performances at the world famous Promenade Concerts in the Royal Albert Hall ) the BBC Philharmonic, BBC  Scottish, Royal Scottish National  Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, The London Philharmonic, Opera North and Contrabassoon on Lord of the Rings Twin Towers DVD. I also spent 3 years in the Hong Kong Philharmonic and 10 years in the Ulster Orchestra. I have performed for numerous TV, Radio and CD recordings.

I have had my fair share of teachers throughout my career and each one has added to my unique teaching style. I can promise you will learn from me in one lesson than in multiple lessons from any other teacher! My teacher's over the years include William Waterhouse, David Chatwin, Andrew Barnell and Ed Warren.

I approach teaching in a holistic way. Musicality is the ultimate goal, but a sold technique and mastery of the instrument are needed to achieve this target. I've found I work best with 16 years and beyond, as I can articulate my wishes with ease to that age group.

Need help with your reeds? I’ve made thousands of reeds and have a tried and tested method to get your reed doing exactly what you want it to do. All you need to do is crow that reed!

I studied with Julian for about a year when I was picking up the bassoon again after a long hiatus for 10+ years.  Julian got me outfitted with new reeds and a bocal that made playing in tune and consistently easier than ever before.  Julian is a special teacher in that he not only teaches technique well, but also shares his phenomenal sense of musicality.  I found him particularly gifted in teaching phrasing and where to accentuate in a series of many notes.  He has an immaculate attention to detail, so be ready to concentrate and you can pick up a lot in a short time with Julian.  I can't recommend him more highly.

Music expression is my focus but correcting bad habits and technical difficulties need to be addressed along the way. So technical studies are used to improve technique, while developing your own unique expression to portray your musical ideas.
