Dr. Karla Ordonez is the former adjunct professor at McMurry, Hardin-Simmons, and Abilene Christian Universities where she taught flute, harmony, forms and analysis, and music appreciation. On top of having taught a successful and enthusiastic tri-collegiate flute studio, she continues to perform in orchestral, chamber, and solo venues. She has performed internationally with the European International Music program at the North Carolina School of the Arts touring France, Italy, Spain, and the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria. Karla has performed at the National Flute Conventions in Nashville (2004), Pittsburgh (2006), and New Orleans (2013) premiering new works or rarely performed pieces for flute solo/ensemble. In 2018, she also performed in the Texas Musical Educators’ Convention with the Key City Winds, the resident woodwind quintet founded in Abilene, TX. Orchestral experiences include the Chautauqua Institution Summer Orchestra, the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, and Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra.
With a minor in Early Music, Baroque flute studies have included giving lectures on Jacque “Le Romain” Hotteterre's use of ornamentation and treatise, under the tutelage of Helen Valenza and Paul O'Dette. Karla has won and performed in masterclass competitions on traverso as well as participated in the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin College.
As an adjudicator and clinician, she has judged several southwest regional competitions and presents lectures from "Baroque Flute: Past & Present" to "How to Practice: Middle Schoolers". As former director of the Big Country Flute Day in west Texas, Dr. Ordonez worked on bringing in guest artists, contemporary technique classes, and flute choir to the region every spring. Dr. Ordonez was former faculty at the Eastman Community School of Music, Oklahoma State University, and Houghton College. She received performance degrees from Louisiana State University, University of North Texas, and the Eastman School of Music.
I believe in finding the potential in every student, no matter the background or level of ability. Focusing on all aspects of music, I encourage student to ask questions as well as to think critically; forming a well-rounded music education and self-confidence whether in a classroom or on stage.
