I have been playing piano for 26 years and helping other music lovers learn to play for the last 19 of those. I earned my B.F.A. at the California Institute of the Arts and my M.M. at SUNY Buffalo, both in piano performance. I love constantly learning more about music and piano while exploring it with my students.
I believe in starting with each students interests and motivations and using those as a jumping off point to further explore music theory, history, pianistic technique and musicality. I focus a lot on how each student learns best and how they can practice most efficently and effectively. Students help choose repertoire they are interested in and I do my best to encourage them to explore the aspects of the music that interest them most and help them discover new ways of tackling the challenges they encounter.
I use many different teaching methods. It really depends on the student (their age, skill level, interests, etc.). At the first lesson we will discuss the students interests and goals and determine method books (or specific pieces) from there.
