About

Kayla Tilghman is a classically trained violinist with 14+ years experience performing in ensembles. She is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, and holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance. Kayla has been teaching private violin and viola lessons since 2015. She also has experience teaching all levels of Music Theory, as well as coaching and performing in small chamber ensembles.

Before attending VCU, Kayla studied at the University of Mary Washington for one year with Johanna Beaver. During that year, Kayla performed in solo recitals and in the first violin section of the UMW Philharmonic alongside world-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman in a sold out performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto.

Kayla has also studied with Susan Bedell, Kimberly Ryan, and Susanna Klein. She has performed in master classes with famous violinists such as Philippe Quint and Anne Akiko Meyers. She hopes to share her love of music with all of her students, and believes curiosity is the best teacher.

My teaching method involves frequent discussions with my students about their goals and learning style. I try and tailor each lesson to best suit the student's needs. I always start with fundamentals and maintain the importance of music theory in addition to simply being able to play the instrument. I keep my lessons positive and explorative, and I give my students many opportunities to choose their repertoire if they wish. The lessons are structured, but not rigid.  I believe the most receptive student is one who is comfortable to explore their interest in the arts and eager to learn new things.

I have a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from Virginia Commonwealth University, where I completed the Strings Pedagogy course to prepare for private teaching. I have been teaching private lessons since 2015 and have experience teaching music to ages 4-65+.

I typically use the Suzuki Method because the books are widely available and affordable. If students already have books that are appropriate for their level, then I am happy to use those.
