About
I am a passionate educator wth extensive professional experience as a classroom teacher for middle school and high school students. I believe that all students can master the art of mathematics and nothing brings me more joy than helping a student experience success in their mathematics courses.
As a founding member and creator of the mathematics department of an early-college model school, I have had the privilege of both teaching and creating the curriculum for all core courses offered in high school from Pre-Algebra through Calculus, including SAT preparation courses. My primary experience is in working with students in a classroom setting at the high school level, though I have also supported student learning at the college-level for both online and in-person courses.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Case Western Reserve University and transitioned to a career in teaching upon graduation. I am a thinker, a creator and a problem-solver. Because of my background, I offer a unique perspective and approach to teaching mathematics that is often refreshing to students who may struggle in a more traditional mathematics classroom.
All students can learn math. In my experience, the two main barriers to succeeding in mathematics are a weak foundation in the basics of mathematics and a lack of confidence, both of which can be overcome through hard work and the support of a great teacher.
Because mathematics builds on itself, it is essential to master the necessary prerequisite skills and concepts in order to be able to access new areas. I focus on identifying and strengthening the areas of weakness in the foundational skills alongside the current material. Mastering the basics not only allows for clarity and a much deeper understanding of the subject but also builds up confidence which is essential for learning. I pride myself in my ability to break skills down for students and provide clear and concise instruction.
Building confidence also comes from a supportive and positive learning environment. As a teacher, it is crucial for me to build a relationship with my students and to create a comfortable, judgement-free learning environment. Learning is a process and I make sure that my students know that I will be there to support them through every mistake that is made and every question that is asked. I am patient, personable and most importantly, I truly believe that every student can and will experience success in mathematics.
Every student is a unique individual and my teaching methods reflect that. It is my job to figure out the exact needs of the students I work with and adjust my instruction to accommodate. If I have tried all of the strategies I know and a student is still struggling, I create a new strategy. I love that students think and process information in such different ways because it challenges me to continually improve upon my instruction and deepen my own understanding of mathematics.
