About

Hi musical friends and all in between!  I have been playing and teaching music for many decades and like to base my curriculum to the student's style and interests.  I don't have my own "method", but what I have been teaching over the years has yielded success for my students, which makes it SO MUCH FUN!  I like to have fun in my lessons and teaching style and value the student's input for likes/dislikes.   I attended the University of Alabama where I started studying to be a Music Therapist and studied for Flute & Piano Performance in the early 2000's under some prestigious instructors.

My love of piano started at the age of 5, where I began with traditional, classical studies.  By the time I was at the age of 12, my teacher started encouraging me to enter piano competitions around the state of GA.  In 5th grade, I picked up the Flute in beginner band and the rest is history!  During my High School & College years, I took on several beginner Flute & Piano students and would travel to their homes or school once a week after school for private lessons.

With my background in Classical studies, I have had the privilege of performing the flute at several recitals over the years, as well as being involved in plays and musicals.  In my piano career, I have been able to be an accompanist for many different instruments and vocalists, as well as my church's worship band.

I have much to share about learning music with my students in Flute and/or Piano and teach complete beginners up to late intermediate level.  I look forward to learning, celebrating, and having fun with you!

I would describe my teaching style as engaging and fun.

Piano Students:  If you are a true beginner to piano and want to learn how to read and play music, we will do a lot of hands-on Theory training to learn note placement on the keyboard/piano,  train your ear to recognize pitches, and learn fun & popular tunes.  For Intermediate Piano students, we will learn technique, playing with a metronome, advanced theory, ear training, and start to learn fun, popular, and challenging pieces of music.  For those wanting to engage more in Gospel or Worship music, we will learn how different chord structures that can create a Worship atmosphere, beginning improvisation, and how songs are composed and structured for a better understanding of how to accompany within a band-setting.

Flute Students:  If you are a true beginner to the Flute, we will learn how to properly put together and tune your flute to the basic band standard, work with your embouchure (correct mouth placement) and the head-joint to make the best sound to blow your peers away, as well as learn theory, scales, fingerings & technique, and fun pieces of music.  If you are on an intermediate level we will learn how to produce a wonderfully clear & luscious tone, technique, learn challenging repertoire, & sight-reading.  If you are in a school band, we will train towards All-State or any other competitions that you may be enrolled in your respective area.

Beginner Piano Students:  We focus on learning the notes of the piano, how to read music, and rhythm.   Alfred's "Basic Piano Library" has been VERY SUCCESSFUL in learning notes, how to read music, theory.  I also use James Bastien's "Scales, Chords, & Arpeggios", John Thompson Modern Course for the Piano, Volume 1; Michael Aaron Piano Course, Book 1 & 2 (this has a great combination of Theory and Beginning piano all in one).  Also, we learn any popular song you may be interested in learning.

Intermediate Piano Students: We focus on Style, Etudes (which build finger strength), Scales, & Movement.  James Bastien "Scales, Chords, & Arpeggios"; Hannon "The Virtuoso Pianist" for etudes and finger exercises, a variety of books from John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano (all volumes);  Boroque, Romantic, Classical, & Contemporary Classical music, pop or rock music, as well as any popular song that you may be interested in learning how to play.
