About

Hey there. I'm Kirsty Morphett and I am a musician, teacher and music facilitator based in Melbourne, Australia. I am passionate about the power of music to transform individuals, and collective humanity.

I have been learning, practicing, playing, performing, writing, and creating music for a total of over 35 years and teaching individuals and groups privately and in schools for over 15 years. In that time, I have been through a journey through the challenges and glories of playing and practicing music, and witnessed others do the same.

I am an active musician, currently performing in Balkan/European folk ensemble Anja & Zlatna. Past projects have spanned styles from vocal a cappella trio Myriad, to orchestral folk/rock (Lamplight, The Forgotten Ghost) to soul/funk/groove (North City) and stylistically diverse solo project Kotet.

My professional study has included a Bachelor of Music, as well as postgraduate study in Community and Cultural Development (VCA) and professional development with Kalani Das (USA - Developmental Community Music), Orff Schulwerk Level 1, as well as Bobby McFerrin and Rhiannon (Circlesongs - Omega Institute). Through this breadth of experience, I have facilitated group vocal and musical improvisation workshops and classes since 2015.

In 2018, I began developing my own signature work, under the name of Collective Music. The philosophy of this work is that music should be learnt, practiced and created together. Through being on both sides of the traditional individualistic paradigm of education - as student and teacher - I found very telling gaps in this landscape. These gaps spoke of the musical legacy we have inherited from European traditions, and the cultural attitudes this has embedded within us around talent, elitism and the place of music in our society.

I am also passionate about music's ability to bring us into a deeper relationship with ourselves, for personal therapy, healing and expression. In my opinion, this is where music's most potent value lies, and this is the other side of the coin to connection with others.

This has led me to a growing passion to break down these barriers to musical engagement. It is my mission to make music a second language in our culture. Something we do as freely as playing games in social situations. Something we do instead of turning on the TV. Something we do not as a competition or a way to gain status, but as a way to connect, create relationships, and undergo personal and cultural transformation.

Music is powerful, and Music Is Life. I hope to show this through my work, and I invite any music lovers into my world, to create a new culture in, and through this magical sound-language we have created.

My professional study has included a Bachelor of Music from Melbourne Polytechnic, as well as postgraduate study in Community and Cultural Development (VCA) and professional development with Kalani Das (USA - Developmental Community Music), Orff Schulwerk Level 1, as well as Bobby McFerrin and Rhiannon (Circlesongs - Omega Institute NY).

I have developed a range of my own methods for teaching, which are informed by the work of Bobby McFerrin, Rhiannon, Kalani Das, Orff Schulwerk and my own insights from over 15 years of teaching individuals and groups.

We focus on learning music in the context of creative exploration, and following your own inspiration and motivations. We should always learn exactly the music that we love the most, and brings us the most joy, expression and satisfaction.

I can help you find your path with music, discover your passions, unlock your creativity and expression and make music a fulfilling part of your life. Please get in touch to share what you dream of doing with music and I can let you know how I can help!
