About

I’m Klay, a seasoned drummer with extensive experience. I currently perform live shows multiple times a month with various projects where I play drums and also contribute to producing and writing much of the music. My knowledge comes from a lifetime of private drum lessons with various incredible instructors, grade school band experience (symphonic/concert band, jazz band, and marching band, where I served as drumline section leader), and my education at the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media, where I earned my Drum Set Certificate. I also had the proviledge to return and assist as an instructor for my high school marching band drumline for one season.

I’ve been playing the drum set since I was about 9 years old and have taught drum students of all ages, from young children to high school, college students, and adults. I love to create an engaging learning environment tailored to each students individual goals.  I have real world knowledge and insights to give to my students with my live performance and writing experience to prepare them for any gig, and to just have fun!

Teaching Style

Adaptive and supportive, but realistic. I aim to be focused on guiding the student and tayloring to their specific interests and goals, whilst being goal oriented in order to keep achieving important milestones.  Hands-on and demonstrating is very important in my teaching as for I feel that if encourages an active role in the students learning. I like to transcribe and give visuals, teaching how to read drumset music, as well as following a chart if necessary. Recorded examples and learning by ear are also important in my teaching routine.

Curriculum

Jim Chapin- Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer is one that I like to reference.
