About

I've had the great privilege to work with some of the greatest classical flute players of the 20th and 21st centuries: Jean Pierre Rampal, Julius Baker (New York Philharmonic), Mindy Kaufmann (New York Philharmonic), Carol Wincenc, Lois Schaeffer (Boston Symphony Orchestra), Michael Hasel (Berlin Philharmonic), and Donald Peck (Chicago Symphony). My performing has taken me throughout Europe and much of the east and west coasts on the United States, as well as two tours to Puerto Rico.

My orchestral and chamber work includes the New Bedford Symphony (MA); the Augusta Symphony and Augusta Opera orchestras, and Musica Antiqua (GA); the Eugene Symphony and Opera orchestras, the Oregon Mozart Players, the Oregon Festival of American Music Orchestra, the University Orchestra, and the Oregon Chamber Players; and Spencer Beauties flute duo with continuo (Eugene, OR).

My trips outside the classical world include the Augusta Symphony Bluegrass BandCarl and LeeAnn Folk Duo (GA); and Kendálin, a world folk fusion ensemble (OR) (cd available on iTunes or at www.kendalin.com).

In Oregon, I performed with the Red Lantern Ensemble a small chamber group presenting a wide variety of music and ensemble types;  and Thousand Waves, an ensemble presenting a variety of styles of music from jazz to tangos, renaissance to modern, Japanese to Irish, and much more. The group consists of various combinations of flute, classical guitar, Japanese koto, and percussion.

I began my private teaching studio while still in high school, building to the 40+ years of teaching experience from beginner to advanced, very young to old, kindergarten through university.

I graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts with a BA degree in Flute Performance. I was honored to study at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and then went on to earn my MMus degree in Flute Performance, graduating with honors from the University of Oregon.

Each student has different needs, strengths, and abilities and with my years of teaching experience I am quick to adjust to those needs.

The focus in my teaching is good technique: proper body positioning, fluidity in fingerings and note reading, strong concept of "the sound" of the flute and the control and development of a good, consistent tone, including vibrato, pitch, and optimal use of air in all registers.

I am a trained classical flutist, so I use the techniques of the masters before me: scales, standard repertoire,  etudes, etc. I believe a solid foundation in all these opens the doors to success and understanding other styles, including jazz, world music, improvisation, and many others.

BA-Mus Wheaton College, Magna cum laude, awarded Edna D. Parks Prize for Music Theory; University of Oregon, MMus, awarded Outstanding Graduate Woodwind Player; Member of the board of Chatham Music Club.

My tried and true lesson books for the initial learners are "A Tune A Day" ( Herfurth) and the  Rubank Elementary through Advanced series. For advanced student we use the Taffanel and Gaubert 17 Grand Daily Finger  Exercises; Etudes by Andersen Berbuguier as well as others; solos from Baroque through modern including Bach, Mozart, Chaminade, Debussy,  Griffes, etc.
