About

Lily Gelman is an NYC based indie rock singer-songwriter. She graduated from Berklee College of Music in May of 2023, receiving a Bachelor of Music in Songwriting. Now, Lily wants to pay it forward and help others get into their dream schools.

Using her first hand experience of the audition process, Lily can help prepare students for what to expect, how to manage nerves, and how to present yourself as the best candidate for the college.

In addition to audition prep, Lily teaches pop/rock voice lessons and songwriting.

Lily’s vocal training started as a member of the Canadian Children’s Opera Company at age 5. While attending a school for the arts in elementary and middle school she sang in multiple jazz and contemporary choirs. In high school she focused on rock and pop vocal training and songwriting with singer-songwriter, Kat Lucas, who toured with P!nk. This experience inspired Lily to pursue singing and songwriting as a career. While attending Berklee College of Music, Lily had extensive vocal training in rock and pop. She sang and played keyboard in several student rock bands.

Lily’s teaching experience started at age 16, teaching private piano lessons to elementary aged students. She taught songwriting to at risk teens living at Covenant House, a homeless shelter in Toronto. In her senior year of high school she was the director of music at an overnight camp in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec. In this role, Lily led the camp Glee Club to first place in a local competition. She also directed the camp musical, Aladdin. Lily is a passionate teacher, with extensive experience working with budding musicians. Her teaching style is centered around what sparks passion in her students. Lily has a gift for connecting with people and bringing out the best in them.

As a songwriter, Lily has been mentored by Bonnie Hayes (wrote hit songs “Have a Heart” and “Love Letter” from the acclaimed Bonnie Raitt album Nick of Time) and Rodney Alejandro (member of The Script). Her conversational indie music is warm, with a vintage flare. Evoking artists like Alanis Morissette and Maggie Rogers, Lily's vulnerability is the guiding force of her artistry. With a fervent desire to connect with people, the singer-songwriter uses her sharp storytelling to pick apart the shades of emotions and experiences we have as human beings, and report back.

Voice:

I'm passionate about helping students find their own authentic voice. Voice lessons are 1 hour workshops, developing vocal technique through warm-ups and exercises and working on songs of the student’s choosing. I will also recommend songs for students’ individual needs and areas for growth. Skills that students will develop include pitch and tone, belting, switching between head voice and chest voice, learning to emotionally connect when singing, performance techniques, and more. I take students at all levels, my only requirement is that you are excited to sing and learn:) No prior singing experience needed.

Audition Prep:

I offer college audition prep as 30 minute Q/A meetings for those looking to gain more insight into Berklee College of Music, 45 minute or 1 hour skill development sessions, and 1 hour lessons to work on audition repertoire for vocalist and singer-songwriters. Skill development sessions include sight singing, ear training, and interview practice.

Songwriting:

Songwriting lessons are centered around what the student wants to achieve. I teach songwriting basics for those who are completely new to songwriting, help students edit and develop their songs and take them to the next level, breakdown song form, rhyme schemes, prosody (when all elements work together to support the central message of the song), and much more.
