About

Get to know me a little! In this video, I talk a bit about my teaching style, with samples of my student performances and my teaching, and more.

Teaching Style

Among my greatest joys in life are teaching students of all ages and levels.

Some of my students have been accepted to All State and All New England festivals as well as high ranked music schools. Others have come to me as adults, having played in previous decades in school music programs, and find joy in returning to the flute. Others begin at a young age (I have started students (in person in Vermont, through the Suzuki Method) as young as age 3. Most of my fully online students are adults or teens. I consider it a high accomplishment for a student to find a joy in life through playing duets with a friend, or with a local amateur ensemble. Whatever your goals, I hope to inspire you toward them and to assist in finding the best and most fruitful path for you in reaching your goals.

Curriculum

Please scroll down if you're an intermediate or advanced player!

I often, but not always, start with the Suzuki Materials, sometimes in addition to other materials. I have taught (and am fully trained in) a more purist Suzuki method and philosophy, and I have also used the materials as a foundation to the repertoire for students with all interests without necessarily sticking with the methodology details.

Some options for beginning reading could be Trevor Wye's "Beginner's Book for Flute, Part 1" (for adults) or "A Tune a Day" edited by Hurfurth and Stuart (all ages) or "Abracadabra Flute" for younger students. I'm also comfortable using other method books or materials to suit a student's interests, after confirming they cover the essential basics. I've also worked with students on folk fiddle tunes or other repertoire of interests, and helped establish the basics through this repertoire, with or without supplementary materials.

A typical path for intermediate students may or may not include some combination of continuation with the Suzuki materials, Rubank's "Supplementary Studies," Yaus "40 Rhythmical Studies," "Selected Duets Volume 1 & 2," either "Concert and Contest Collection for Flute" by H. Voxman OR "24 Short Concert Pieces" by Robert Cavally AND/OR Suzuki Repertoire or hand selected repertoire according to student's choices and unique developmental needs. I often continue with Reichert's "7 Daily Exercises," Trevor Wye's "Practice Book for the Flute Books 1-6, Omnibus Edition"  and additional more advanced classical repertoire. Often students may move on with "Melodious and Progressive Studies" revised by Robert Cavally. I normally supplement with ensemble options, and am experienced with simple video and audio splicing. I'm also open to student interest and goals in use of other materials.

For advanced students seeking the potential of music as a profession, I recommend including   Taffanel and Gaubert's "17 Grands Excercises Journaliers" in addition to Trevor Wye's Omnibus Practice books (see above). I also ensure that both intermediate and advanced repertoire representative of each time period of classical music is included, including representation from Bach's Sonatas, Mozart's Concertos, some selections from 19th or early 20th century French composers, additional selections of 20th century music, and samples of 21st century music. I may also include orchestral excerpts , etudes from Berbiguer, Reichert, Andersen, and others, and additional repertoire of the student's choice with guidance regarding their needs to meet their goals. I have also sometimes used Robert Dick's "The Other Flute" as well as his "Circular Breathing for the Flutist."
