About

I am a songwriter and composer with two decades of experience playing piano and singing. I enjoy the neural workout playing Baroque composition, the decadence of Classical composition, the passion of Romantic composition, the blending of textures in Impressionist composition, and the extended metricities and tonalities of Contemporary composition. I also enjoy applying classical theory in order to accompany pop songs.

Teaching Style

I want to make sure my students learn how to use the piano to express themselves and engage with their musical interests. I provide steady encouragement so that students can accept mistakes as part of the educational process. I hope they will find a love for practicing and performing.

Curriculum

I teach mostly beginning piano, using the John W. Schaum series of lesson books and notespellers in order to teach the fundamentals of music theory, note recognition, and ear training. In the beginning, I find it most important to develop safe practicing and playing technique using exercises and short songs from the books to teach music theory. As the student begins to master basic concepts of music theory, I begin to introduce compositions that are either part of piano performance repertoire or will serve the individual student's interests. I encourage the use of a metronome during daily practice and lesson time.
