About

Hi! I have 35+ years of teaching experience in violin and viola. I have also had a full-time viola career in full-time symphony orchestras since 1985. With the current pandemic, it is an ideal time to expand my teaching studio since live performances are likely going to be on hold for the foreseeable future. I enjoy teaching and am working to develop my effective system in starting beginning violin students online. I have about 10 years of experience teaching online, so I already had my system in place prior to the pandemic. I would love to teach you or you child either violin or viola. I start beginners or can teach intermediate, advanced and professional levels in both children and adult amateurs.

My training:

The Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for Music and the Arts, High School Diploma 1979  - Violin and Viola Performance. (The Fame School) New York, NY

Bachelor's of Music in Viola Performance from The Juilliard School, 1983

Cleveland Institute of Music, Master of Music Program/Artist Diploma Program in Viola Performance, 1983 - 1985

Teaching: Cleveland Institute of Music Preparatory Division Viola Teacher, Aspen Music Festival Orchestral Coach, Extensive Private Violin and Viola Teaching Studio, Adjunct Professor of Viola, Chamber Music and String Repertoire at the Alabama School of Fine Arts, Adjunct Professor for String Pedagogy at the University of Montevallo, Violin/Viola Teacher at the TuneUp! Program of the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Wyoming, Jackson Hole Music Experience String Summer Camp.

Professional Performing Experience: Violist, Phoenix Symphony, Alabama Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Oklahoma Symphony, Grand Teton Music Festival

Primarily Classical style. I am a very technical teacher, believing in working on foundational study - scales, arpeggios, etudes, technical studies as well as pieces. I believe in a strong background of note-reading, sight-reading, understanding of theory, keys, form, etc.

While I do teach from the Suzuki books, I do not teach the Suzuki method.

For Beginners, I use All for Strings, Book 1 and 2, Essentials for Strings Scale Book and the Suzuki Books

Scale Books: Barbara Barber Scales for Advanced Violinists, then Flesch Scale System

Etudes: Wohlfahrt, Mazas, Kreutzer, Rode, Gavinies

Technical Exercises: Melodious Double-Stops, Schradieck, Sevcik
