About

Guitarist, composer, and educator Manuel Barbará graduated summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music with a double major in composition and performance. Manuel specializes in contemporary progressive rock and metal, advanced guitar technique, extended-range guitars, and contemporary post-tonal concert hall music. While at Berklee, Manuel was able to study with guitar luminaries such as Joe Stump, Shaun Michaud, and Jon Finn, as well as with composers such as Arnold Friedman, Marti Epstein, and Alla Cohen. He also gained 1000+ hours of one-on-one teaching experience as a Core Music Tutor helping students master their coursework in Harmony (contemporary and traditional), Ear-Training, Counterpoint, and Conducting.

I have always been something of a mathematician at heart, and I believe in teaching students to apply that sort of methodical critical thinking to all aspects of music. I believe that music education should be goal-oriented, but that there are certain aspects of music that are fundamental whether the student wants to play funk, modern extreme metal, or to write the next atonal masterpiece. To this end, I always meet my students where they are and focus on where they want to go, addressing these fundamentals in a way that will be engaging for all.

I encourage students to delve into theory  and technique deeply enough that they shift from being sets of rules to being a framework and a tool that can be used (and abused) as needed, and I seek to help my students build the mental and physical roadmaps that they need to achieve this goal.

I also teach lessons specifically designed to help students build confidence and understanding on extended range guitars.
