Marie Strassenburg

I began studying piano when I was 9 years old. When I was 17, I started teaching piano privately from my own studio. I worked as a TA for piano classes at Riverside City College School of Music and tutored piano and theory students at the same institution. I currently teach privately for the Community School of Music through the University of Redlands as a Junior Faculty Member. I also teach and volunteer in their Annual Summer Piano Camp. I am a Senior Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at the University of Redlands and will begin my Masters of Music Pedagogy program in the Fall of 2019.

I believe that each and every student has their unique set of abilities and strengths, and I believe those abilities should be acknowledged, fostered, encouraged and inspired. So many teaching methods and instructors today focus all efforts on uniformity and one-size-fits-all standards for all students. I believe this is wrong and hinders the natural freedom to create art. 

All of my lessons are structured around the student's goals, desires, wishes, passions, and strengths. My goal is their success, which can only be measured by their ability to freely create and express themselves through music. 

With all of these things in mind, I do have different focus areas which all students participate in in ways that satisfy their needs and learning styles. All students learn technique, note reading, theory, performance and listening skills. Who says we just can't have a blast while doing so? ;)

I do expect regular practice from each of my students; however, I create a practice plan for my students that is mindful of the amount of time able to be invested, other non-music commitments, age, level and learning style. I will work with you and it'll be fun!
