About

Hello new friends!
A bit about me...

♫ I LOVE introducing violin and viola to kids and adults alike!
♫ I have over 20 years playing experience
♫ I have over 10 years of teaching experience
♫ I hold a Masters of Music degree from the University of Ottawa
♫ I have played professionally with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, National Academy Orchestra and Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra
♫ In my downtime I enjoy cooking and spending time with my spunky little wiener dog named Oskar!

As an educator, I am passionate about helping both children and adult learners achieve their full potential and explore their creativity in a nurturing yet rigorous environment. I care about my students greatly- when you sign up for lessons, you are immediately a part of the family! I commend you for taking this step in your musical journey- you will thank yourself later! Please feel free to contact me with requests for lesson times/classes, or any questions you may have. Beginners welcome! Adults and retired folks welcome! LGBTQ+ friendly environment.  I look forward to meeting you! :)

Lessons are first and foremost FUN- they will make you want to come back! I want learners to feel good about how they sound, and be excited to play. When we study music we aren't just learning how to play an instrument (though that part is pretty cool!). We are also learning how to think and listen critically, improve our focus, fine motor skills, coordination, memory and confidence. I approach music education from a holistic and mindful perspective by incorporating fundamental technique, musicianship, creativity, music theory and performance skills into the building blocks of learning right from the start. Though I am classically trained, I welcome a wide range of musical interests in my studio, and encourage improvisation and musical autonomy.  I am encouraging, patient, direct, and imaginative in my communication style.  I use metaphors, imagery, body awareness, and mindfulness to inform my teaching and help students access their artistic voice. As a student you will learn practical skills such as how to practice effectively and efficiently, how to navigate performance anxiety or confidence issues, and how to create a sound you love to hear! I have seen first hand that everyone is able to enjoy music learning no matter what your age, or skill level. I am here for you on this journey!

I use the Suzuki, RCM and Essential Strings teaching methods as jumping off points for further learning. Depending on the individual student's needs, we may supplement or replace elements from these methods with other repertoire/genres. I enjoy teaching students songs that interest them, and bring out the best in their playing. These could include pop songs, movie/TV themes, fiddle tunes, jazz standards exc. I use fun interactive games to teach tonal and rhythmic awareness, and embrace music theory and active listening as integrated parts of the curriculum. When the student is ready, scales and technical exercises are used to deepen learning and facilitate musicality. Students are encouraged to use their natural creativity and curiosity to facilitate their learning. The priority will be on the cultivating the joy of music making!
