About

Hello and welcome!

My name is Marty and I am a musician and guitarist.  I've been performing for over 20 years, and have been teaching for almost 10.  I have performed and taught in a variety of styles, including but not limited to rock, blues, funk, reggae, soul, classic, electronic, and jazz.  I have also taught students of all ages and skill levels.

My ultimate goal as a guitar teacher is to help you feel realize your goals!  I also prioritize showing how the material we learn informs the music we love.  I enjoy connecting the dots between the chords and scales that we learn as foundational building blocks, to the songs that inspired the student to learn in the first place.  I find that seeing the practical application of the theory really helps students gain a a greater understanding.

Message me if you have any questions!  Looking forward to helping you however I can :)

Teaching Style

I start with basic CAGED chord theory and pentatonic scale theory.  I find that these building blocks are almost universal to any type of music played on guitar, and so they're great starting points for anyone in the instrument, regardless of goals.

I recommend reading music for anyone who wants to pursue music academically, or play in the jazz, classical, or musical theatre genres.  Other genres (blues, rock, funk) developed and were passed down aurally on the instrument, and reading is less necessary in these genres.  I am happy to help anyone who wants to learn how to read music, I just refrain from universally requiring it.

After getting basics down, it's really about the students' goals.  We will work together to figure out how to get you to your desired level of achievement.
