Teaching Style
I want to create a safe place in which my students can grow intellectually and spiritually. The deeper and far more visceral aspect of music must come from the “heart,” or to be more objective, the emotive centers of the personality. I say “spiritual growth” because it is the application of one’s personal experience to that of the piece that creates both the listening and performing phenomenon. It is my hope that this experience will widen the perspectives of my students.
Curriculum
As a teacher my initial efforts are dedicated to finding what about a particular instrument or style is driving the student. Defining this allows for me to dial in the trajectory of the lessons and encourage students in an effective way. With that in mind I recommend having a method book for students to expand on their understanding between lessons.
For my adult songwriter students I recommend The Courage to Create by Rollo May (Found Here on Amazon) as it succinctly explains some of the processes and theory behind human creativity.
