She began her teaching career in 2000 while studying for her Bachelor’s degree in piano performance at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her passion for teaching led her to pursue a Master’s degree in Music Performance, and she later earned her doctorate degree at the University of Arizona, majoring in piano performance and minoring in music education with an emphasis on piano pedagogy. To enhance my teaching skills, I have also completed the life coaching program at Coach University, where I learned to connect to students on a deeper level.

Mayu has taught at the University of Nevada, Reno for 10 years, and has since continued her career as a soloist and chamber artist, performing at numerous events including the Artown series, master classes, Reno Chamber Orchestra Competition, University of Nevada Orchestra concerts, and Toccata Symphony Orchestra concerts.

Music is a language. Like any language, there are many basics of music that must be mastered before advancing to more complex applications. During your course of study, I will cover all areas of musicianship in a progressive manner: theory, technique, formal analysis, harmony, ear training, sight-reading, performance, and a comprehensive study of musical literature.  I truly feel that a well-rounded musical education helps students define for themselves what music means to them.
Because each student is different, I approach students as individuals and challenge each according to their own unique potential. Learning music can be difficult and frustrating, but I attempt to make it as fun and enjoyable as possible. My ultimate goal is to nurture each student’s artistic spirit and a lifelong love of music!
