About
Hi, Asalamualaikum, Namaste, and Sat Sri Akal!
I'm a classically trained vocalist and harmonium player with over 50 years of experience in Indian and Pakistani music. My journey began at the age of 7, inspired by my elder brother's singing. By 9, I was performing on stage, and my passion for music only grew from there.
I honed my skills at a private music academy, where I deepened my understanding of vocal techniques and the harmonium. Largely self-taught, I cultivated a unique style influenced by traditional and contemporary South Asian music. My dedication led me to Government College University Lahore, where I was admitted based on my musical talents. There, I actively participated in the music society, performing weekly for students and faculty. I further pursued a Master's degree in Music, solidifying my academic foundation.
Professionally, I became an approved radio singer in the 1980s, contributing to Pakistani radio and television (PTV). My performances have graced stages across Pakistan and internationally, including India, Nepal, and Japan. I've had the honor of entertaining diverse audiences, including celebrities from the film, radio, and comedy sectors.
Now residing in the U.S., I'm eager to share my rich musical heritage with students worldwide. Whether you're interested in classical ragas, contemporary Bollywood tunes, or mastering the harmonium, I offer lessons in Urdu and Hindi tailored to your interests and skill level.
Let's embark on this musical journey together, celebrating the vibrant traditions of South Asian music.
Teaching Style
My teaching approach is personalized and student-centric, focusing on your individual musical goals and interests. Whether you're passionate about vocal training, interested in learning the harmonium, or eager to combine both, our lessons will be tailored to suit your aspirations.
For students focusing solely on vocal training, we'll delve into techniques such as breath control, pitch accuracy, and expressive singing, exploring a repertoire that spans classical ragas to contemporary Bollywood songs.
If you're inclined towards the harmonium, lessons will cover fundamental skills, including scales, finger techniques, and accompaniment methods, progressing to playing along with various musical pieces.
For those interested in both singing and harmonium, we'll integrate vocal exercises with harmonium practice, enhancing your ability to self-accompany and enrich your musical expression.
Understanding and interpreting lyrics in Urdu and Hindi is integral to conveying emotion effectively, and we'll incorporate this into our sessions as per your interest.
Above all, I strive to create a supportive and encouraging environment where you feel comfortable exploring your musical potential. Whether you're a beginner or seeking to refine your skills, our lessons will be customized to help you achieve your musical ambitions.
