About
Hello! I am looking forward to meeting you and working with you on your musical education.
I have been teaching music in public schools for 19 years, and I have taught everything from kindergarten general music through high school band and orchestra. I currently teach general music grades 4-6. I have taught instrumental music (band and orchestra 7-12) for 16 years. I am also active in Irish music, specifically tin whistle and fiddle. I have also taught AP music theory for several years and can serve as a resource for students who need assistance with exam prep or tutoring. Additionally, I am active music arranger and have experience arranging music for small chamber ensembles through high school marching bands, and I have experience teaching basic composition using sampling/mixing programs.
Teaching Style
I have a traditional background in music education, instrumental emphasis. I believe in teaching the function of music along with learning how to play an instrument, so I focus on teaching some music theory at the same time as learning how to read music, etc. I also believe that students learn better when they have some background or history about the music and composers they are playing.
Curriculum
I use a variety of readily available student books, and occasionally I will send a PDF of additional exercises I have written for students.
