About

Hi! My name is Nick and I have been teaching guitar, piano, and songwriting lessons for 2 years both privately and also as part of Oaklawn Music Studio in Rhode Island, and St. Maria Goretti School in Long Beach, CA. I have played the guitar for 11 years, been singing for 7, played piano and ukulele for 4, and producing/mixing/audio-engineering for 2. I moved from my home state of Rhode Island to Los Angeles in 2016-2017 and attended the Los Angeles College of Music in Pasadena, CA to earn a Certificate in Music Composition (Songwriting) and have written over 150 songs myself. I have played several live shows around Los Angeles and Rhode Island at farmers markets, art shows, coffee shops (humble venues), and have served as a session instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, and engineer for numerous studio sessions around Los Angeles. If you have any questions about any of my experience (or anything for that matter) feel free to reach out :)

Teaching Style

I find it is best for the student to only use our instruments and nothing else for the first 2 lessons. This helps beginners become acquainted with their  instrument as it is, without it being represented on paper or anywhere else. This also helps me feel out how the student will learn best, as everyone learns in different ways. Once paper is introduced I typically start with just staff paper and a pencil, and then move on to a teaching book.

Curriculum

Curriculum will begin with getting to know the instrument top to bottom (which greatly assists understanding and speeds up learning I have found). Then we will move on to the basics (Instruments: notes, chords, hand positions) (Songwriting: structure, hook, melody) and gradually progress from simple melodies to full songs which are more challenging each time in areas where students need improvement.
