About

Oboist Nicholas Tisherman joined the Colorado Symphony as Second/Assistant Principal Oboe in September 2017. In addition to his appointment in Denver he has appeared as a guest with orchestras across the country, notably the Philadelphia Orchestra, Sarasota Orchestra, and Los Angeles Philharmonic. Nicholas has performed in Europe with the Verbier Festival Orchestra and Orchestra of the Americas under conductors Valery Gergiev, Manfred Honeck, and Carlos Miguel Prieto. He is a proud alumnus of the New York String Orchestra Seminar and Tanglewood Music Center, where in 2015 he collaborated with acclaimed choreographer Mark Morris and was the recipient of the Mickey L. Hooten Memorial Award, given for artistry and character. A New York native and graduate of Juilliard’s Pre-College division, Nicholas holds his Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory, where he studied with John Ferrillo, Anne Gabriele, and Richard Dallessio. He maintains a private studio in Denver and works with the Denver Young Artists Orchestra as a sectional coach, adjudicator, and teaching artist.

I come from a family of educators, both musical and otherwise, and have always held teaching as a sacred obligation as well as something I adore. I have been extremely fortunate to work with some of the best music educators in the world, from the pedagogues on faculty at the New England Conservatory and the Colburn school, the brilliant educators in my ensembles and academic classes at every stage in my training, and those whom I sit among in the Colorado Symphony. I take each of those experiences with me into every lesson I teach, and I try to meet each student with energy, enthusiasm, and joy. My number one goal is for the student to love music more than when they began the lesson.

My very close second goal is to help every student realize what is in their ear (audiation) on the instrument (performance). Each student is different, and deserves a different approach interpersonally and pedagogically. As oboists, some of us sound better on different reeds! I try to tailor my approach to fit each student's needs  while also preaching  important tenets like effective practicing habits, creativity and artistry, and efficient use of the body in oboe playing. I want to help each student experience the joy of improving and learning.
