About

Hi! My name is Nick Mainella, and I'm a Boston-based professional saxophonist and educator. I also run the 10 Minute Jazz Lesson Podcast where I provide short and concise jazz lessons evey week. I have been playing and teaching saxophone for over 15 years and my life is based around music and teaching.

I have a Master's Degree in Saxophone Performance from Western Michigan University, where I studied with Trent Kynaston, Donny McCaslin, Dr. Scott Cowan, and Ingrid Jensen. I received my Bachelor's in Saxophone Performance from the University of New Hampshire, where I studied with great musicians and teachers such as Clark Terry, James Moody, Billy Pierce, Jimmy Heath, Jared Sims, Mark Shilansky, and Dave Seiler.

Being surrounded by all of these great teachers and musicians made my passion for music a lifelong pursuit. These days I am teaching at several schools and academies in the New England area, and am gigging regularly around Boston and the Seacoast area of New Hampshire.

I'm currently a member of several bands and ensembles, including The Soggy Po' Boys, OurBigBand, and Jazzsputin and The Jug Skunks, and I freelance around the area regularly.

I look forward to hearing from you and learning more about what you're hoping to gain from lessons!

My teaching style is completely built around your personal needs on the saxophone. Our first lesson will be an evaluation of your skills, and I will personally tailor the material I present to you to help you get to the next level.

I have a great deal of experience teaching both classical and jazz. I can help you learn any style you want to play.

Most importantly, I like to have fun in lessons! Playing music should be something you look forward to whenever you pick up your instrument, and I want to keep it that way! That doesn't mean that we won't work hard, but fun is at the top of my list for every one of my students.
