About

Hello! I am Parth Chaturvedi, a professional Tabla player and educator with over 6 years of experience performing and teaching this incredible percussion instrument. My musical journey began under the guidance of Pandit Prabhash Maharaj and I am currently under the guidance of Pandit Shubh Maharaj, and I am deeply rooted in the traditions of the Benaras Gharana. Music is a lifelong journey, and my mission is to preserve the rich heritage of classical Indian rhythm while making it accessible, engaging, and structured for modern online learners worldwide.

Over the course of my career, I have had the privilege of performing at major classical music festivals, including Subah e Banaras In Varanasi And Kashi Vandan at Namo Ghat Varanasi, and collaborating with both vocalists and instrumentalists. Teaching online allows me to bridge geographical gaps and share the joy of rhythm with students of all backgrounds and skill levels.

Teaching Style

My lessons are highly customized, structured, and goal-oriented. I focus heavily on building a strong foundation, starting with correct hand posture, precise finger placement (nikas), and the clear production of individual syllables (bols). For beginners, we will explore fundamental rhythms like Teental and Ektaal, slowly progressing to the complexities of kaydas, paltas, and Uthaan. For advanced students, we delve deeper into Riyaz (practice) techniques, accompaniment skills for classical vocal/instrumental music, and the art of solo performance.

Curriculum

My online pedagogy bridges the time-tested oral traditions of classical Indian rhythm with a structured, step-by-step curriculum designed for digital spaces. I believe learning an intricate instrument like the Tabla online requires strict visual and auditory clarity, combined with highly actionable homework assignments.

My live sessions prioritize a four-stage framework:

  • Ergonomics & Posture Alignment: I constantly review your sitting position, hand arch, and wrist-to-drum angles. Good habits early on prevent physical strain and build natural speed.

  • The Mechanics of Sound (Nikas): I isolate individual syllables (bols like Na, Tin, Ta, Dha, Ghe) to focus on tone quality and hand placement before combining them into faster cycles.

  • Vocal Recitation (Padhant): Before your hands touch the drumheads, we practice keeping time with manual claps (Tali) and waves (Khali) while reciting the composition verbally. If you can say it, you can play it.

  • Deliberate Practice Blueprints: You will never walk away from a class wondering what to practice. I provide clear, targeted breakdown charts that outline specific speed intervals, metronome tracking, and hand-stamina exercises for your weekly practice (Riyaz).
