About

Rafael López Vera is a pianist known for his technical capacity, full-bodied sound, and for teaching pianists of all ages and levels across North America. Based in Toronto, Canada, he is active as a soloist and chamber musician, and he teaches at the Elite School of Music in East York and he is co-founder with the violin player Paula Viteri of “the Harmony Staff”, teaching across the GTA. Rafael has also been closely involved with the RCM examinations and has collaborated with teachers in Toronto, playing in their exams and rehearsing for competitions and studio recitals. Rafael's goal as a teacher in Canada is to contribute to creating a more positive and welcoming community for his students while caring about their love for practicing and their passion for music. Mr. López founded his own piano school ("Trivium") in Puebla, Mexico, which ran successfully for four years while holding a prestigious alternate teaching position at the Autonomous University of Puebla before moving to Canada.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is deeply rooted in structured excellence and holistic musical development, anchored by the rigorous pedagogical framework of the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). By seamlessly integrating RCM's curriculum and assessment standards into my lessons, I provide students with a clear, progressive path that builds strong foundations in both instrument technique and comprehensive music theory.

I believe that true musicianship extends beyond the practice room, which is why my instruction is highly performance-oriented. Whether guiding students through intensive, high-performance training programs or preparing them for formal recitals at professional venues, my goal is to build genuine confidence and artistry on stage. Every lesson is personalized to the individual, ensuring that each student receives the specific technical guidance, structured goals, and inspiration they need to unlock their full musical potential.

Curriculum

Teaching Methodology & Core Texts

Comprehensive Materials: Piano Adventures & RCM My curriculum utilizes a flexible, dual-track approach to lesson materials, ensuring that students of all ages and levels have the most effective resources for their development.

  • Piano Adventures (Faber): For beginning students, particularly younger learners, I incorporate the Piano Adventures series. This method provides a highly engaging, step-by-step introduction to the instrument. It builds a strong foundational understanding of reading, rhythm, and technique through creative pieces and theory exercises, making the initial learning process enjoyable and accessible.

  • The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM): As students progress, and for those pursuing a rigorous, internationally recognized standard, my teaching transitions into the RCM pedagogical framework. We utilize the official RCM Celebration Series repertoire books, technical requirement manuals, and music theory workbooks to ensure comprehensive musical development.

My Teaching Method

  • Structured Progression: By blending the engaging approach of Piano Adventures with the structured assessment standards of the RCM, lessons remain goal-oriented. Students move through carefully graded levels, ensuring they master necessary technical and theoretical milestones before advancing.

  • Comprehensive Musicianship: The method goes beyond simply playing notes on a page. I integrate ear training, sight-reading, and rigorous music theory directly into instrument instruction, developing complete and well-rounded musicians.

  • Performance-Driven Goal Setting: Practical application is essential. I prepare students not only for formal examinations but also for stage experiences, from high-performance intensive programs to formal recitals at professional venues. This focus builds stage presence, resilience, and genuine artistic confidence.

  • Tailored Repertoire: While the core methods provide the syllabus, I work closely with each student to select supplementary pieces that resonate with their personal tastes, keeping them motivated and engaged with their musical journey.
