Rakshana Kumaran
About
I am a pianist, music educator, and music producer based in Chennai, India. I completed Grade 8 in Piano and Grade 8 in Music Theory in 2019. I further studied Piano, Music Theory, and Composition at KM Music Conservatory from 2019 to 2020, where I also completed courses in Audio Engineering and Music Production, with practical training in recording, mixing, sound design, and arrangement.
I have been working as an online piano instructor at Spardha School of Music since 2020, conducting one-on-one lessons for students across different age groups (approximately ages 6–18), from beginner to advanced levels. My teaching includes major and minor scales, chords and inversions, technical exercises, repertoire development, and basic to intermediate music theory. I also train students in rhythm, ear training, and performance preparation for recitals and informal showcases.
As a performer, I have presented piano performances at specific events in Chennai, including the inauguration event of a Kawai showroom (2025) and annual student recitals at KM Music Conservatory (2019–2020). These performances included solo piano repertoire in a recital setting.
In addition to teaching and performing, I have been composing and producing music independently from my home studio since 2022. My work includes creating original piano compositions, developing chord progressions, arranging multi-layered tracks, and producing complete song ideas using Logic Pro.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is structured, patient, and tailored to each student’s level and goals. For beginners, I focus on building a strong foundation in piano through scales, basic chords, finger exercises, and simple pieces. I ensure students develop correct technique, posture, and hand coordination from the beginning.
I break down each concept step-by-step so students can clearly understand and apply what they learn. I also guide students on how to practice effectively, helping them build consistency and discipline in their daily practice routine.
For students who want to progress further, I work on improving speed, accuracy, dynamics, and musical expression. I also introduce basic music theory alongside practical playing so students understand the logic behind what they play.
My aim is to make students confident pianists who enjoy playing and can continue learning independently over time.
Curriculum
My teaching method focuses on a step-by-step, practical approach that makes learning piano simple and enjoyable for students of all ages. I begin by building a strong foundation in basic technique, rhythm, and note understanding, and gradually introduce chords, songs, and music theory in a way that is easy to apply. I strongly believe that music is not a born talent, but a skill that can be developed through consistent learning and practice, and I guide my students with this approach. I break down complex concepts into small, manageable steps, ensuring steady progress and confidence in every lesson. I also adapt my method based on each student’s goals and learning pace, while encouraging creativity, expression, and a genuine interest in music.
I use a combination of structured method books and customized materials based on the student’s level and goals. I incorporate graded piano books from Trinity College London and ABRSM to provide a clear and progressive learning path. For beginners, I focus on foundational exercises and simple pieces to develop technique and note reading. I also provide personalized notes, practice exercises, and song-based learning to keep lessons engaging and relevant. As students progress, I introduce scales, chords, and selected repertoire to strengthen both technical skills and musical understanding.
