About

Richard Dye is a 26 year old father of 1 who has a passion for teaching and performing music. A Berklee College of Music Alumnus (class of 2017), Rich has spent much of the last few years teaching flute, saxophone, clarinet, and music theory lessons to students of all ages, backgrounds, and levels.  Most recently, Richard Dye held a private instructor position at Onset School of Music in Wakefield, MA from Sep 2018-Jun 2019, teaching students ranging in age all the way from 6-65 years old! When not teaching, Rich is often performing with musical theater pit ensembles, pop bands, jazz trios and quartets, and a myriad of other ensembles. Recently, Richard performed with his project the Trap Music Orchestra at Afropunk Brooklyn's 2016 Battle of the bands, as well as many well-known venues around the Boston area, to include The SinclairThe Middle East DownstairsBerklee Performance Center, Ryles Jazz Club, and the House of Blues Foundation Room. Book your first 15 minute free lesson trial today to see Rich is the right fit for you!

Teaching Style

Enthusiastic, eclectic, and energizing. These are just a few words that encompass Richard's approach as a teacher of music! At a youthful 26 years of age, Rich likes to make learning into a fun and engaging exercise, that stimulates the mind, keeping his students eager to keep pushing their musical talents to a higher level!

Curriculum

Depending on style and level, I like to supplement my teaching of scales, long tones, articulation, song learning etc. with transcriptions, basic-advanced theory knowledge, ear training (which can be exercised with the help of some free websites), and textbook exercises, etudes, and classical excerpts. Depending on the student's level, instrument of study, and individual learning style, there are are number of texts which I may recommend to complement online lessons, but which may not be completely necessary (all of which range from as low as $5 online to, at most, $13 online). I always do my best to provide free PDFs, when I have them, and if you are concerned you may not be able to afford certain texts, let me know - I will see what I can provide! Below are listed some of the texts which I may recommend, divided by instrument of study. Keep in mind, for all students who have not yet learned music notation I recommend starting with the Standard of Excellence book, in your instrument! This text will give you the basic foundation of music notation, upon which you can build with the exercises in the following book list!

For saxophone:

-Hal Leonard: Rubank Elementary Method for Saxophone (I recommend this text for beginner saxophone students)

-H. Klose: 25 Daily Exercises for saxophone (I recommend for saxophone/clarinet players/students beginner-intermediate level)

-Guy Lacour: 28 Studies for Saxophone (I recommend for saxophone students intermediate-advanced level)

-Sigurd M. Rascher: Top Tones for Saxophone (for advanced level saxophone students)

For flute:

-C. Paul Herfurth: A Tune A Day for Flute (recommended for students beginner-intermediate level)

-E. Wagner: A Foundation to Flute Playing (recommended for students beginner-intermediate level)

For clarinet:

-H. Klose: 25 Daily Exercises for saxophone (although it is initially written for saxophone, I recommend this text also for beginner-intermediate level clarinetists)
