About
Richard Sherwood loves music, teaching, and performing with all his heart. He is from and now lives in Los Angeles. Richard has a BA in jazz performance and has performed around the world playing rock, jazz, world music, dance music and with symphonies.
He has a vast amount of experience teaching students from 3 years old and up.
Teaching Style
After 25 years of teaching, he has learned 2 important things: 1) Every student learns differently and 2) How to create lessons that are both productive and enjoyable for each individual student. Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, he has been teaching from his home and has been surprised at how effective and fun online lessons (and drum circles) can be.
Richard has performed on the finals of America's Got Talent. Recently, he has created large electro-acoustic percussion instrument called the Drumdala. Please check out https://www.drumdala.net for videos, audio, etc.
Curriculum
This really depends on the student. I teach the fundamentals of reading, drum rudiments, and technique. But besides that I try to tune into the individual to find out where they want to go and what's going to work best for them to set them up for success. Some students learn well with visual aids and lots of reading. Some want nothing to do with the reading and learn with their ears.
