About

Hello! 🖐🎶 My name is Robert Aguilar. I graduated from Arizona State University in 2013 with a Bachelor's in Instrumental Music Education. I started my journey by first attending Glendale Community College from 2008-2010. I had the pleasure of working with the esteemed Mr. Bill Humbert where I learned music theory and how to play all of the brass, woodwind, and percussion family of instruments. While at GCC, I also played with the GCC Symphonic Winds on multiple concerts from 2008-2010. Afterwards, I finished my degree at Arizona State University from 2010-2013 where I played with the ASU Sun Devil Marching Band, ASU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, ASU Symphony Orchestra, and various chamber ensembles.

Since graduating from ASU, I have been teaching music for the last 10 years starting with Patterson Elementary in Mesa from 2013-2014, Florence K-8 from 2014-2020, and San Tan Foothills High School from 2021 to present. While at Patterson and Florence K-8, I taught both K-6 general music, beginning band, and beginning choir. At San Tan Foothills, I am the Band Director for both Marching Band and Concert Band. I also currently teach guitar and piano classes. Additionally, I teach private lessons at Guitar Center part-time.

Recording music is another passion of mine. I am an independent recording artist with two full-length metal albums released: Celestial Malefactor (2017), and Conform (2020).

I am an Arizona native, and I have lived here for most of my life. I love getting to show people how to do music whether it's through band, guitar, music theory, or anything else. Teaching music has always been a passion of mine, and no matter what your skill level is, I'd like to invite you take lessons from me 👍

Teaching Style

My teaching style is very patient, especially with beginners who have never done music before. Learning music and how to play an instrument takes a lot of time, dedication, and effort, just like any other skill. It can be very discouraging to not realize your own progress, so I always encourage students to be patient with themselves as they learn techniques and note reading skills even as they make repeated mistakes. Don't give up!

Curriculum

For guitar, I recommend the Hal Leonard Guitar Method series by Will Schmid and Greg Koch. For Band, I recommend Tradition of Excellence by Bruce Pearson and Ryan Nowlin. For Drums, I recommend the Hal Leonard Drumset Method series by Kennan Wylie and Gregg Bissonette. For Piano, I recommend the Alfred's Basic Adult All-in-One Course series by Willard A. Palmer, Morton Manus, Amanda Vick Lethco.
