About

Hunter College B.A. in Music - 2018
Over 10 years of experience playing guitar, 5 years of teaching private guitar and ukulele lessons, and several years of performing and recording experience. Only available for weekend lessons.

My name is Ronnie Ng (my students just call me Ronnie or Mr. R) I have been teaching for about 5 years, at most I have taught up to 20 students individually. I graduated from Hunter College CUNY with a B.A. in music. I am well studied in music theory (my favorite), musicianship skills like reading, writing, and composing your own music, and have been studying guitar for more than 10 years. I am primarily a Jazz guitarist and spent many years study ing blues guitar as well, this includes proficiency in slide guitar (think Derek Trucks). I can play nearly all styles of guitar, I often play with my hands and teach a very effective finger style technique for guitar.

I am currently a school of rock guitar teacher in NJ and am only available to teach lessons on the weekends.

I have recorded in a few studios for mostly hip hop projects, performed in venues in NYC like Arlene's Grocery and Red Room at KGB. At Hunter I performed with the Hunter Jazz Ensemble and played with various smaller jazz quartets and quintets.

Feel free to ask me about a 15 minute trial lesson!

I teach from the ground up, meaning I fully utilize my college background when it comes to music. Nearly all my students all started out with zero background in music and within a few lessons I get all my students reading music for guitar and playing well enough so that they can practice themselves. My approach and goal is to equip all my students with the tools they need to practice and become better musicians on their own. I do not like to use my lesson time to practice with my students unless they needed help with how to practice. Each of my lessons include something new that the student can take home with them. With my more advanced students I dive deeper into guitar and music theory, scales, modes, andĀ harmonic composition.

With an extensive academic background in music, all my students haveĀ  a structured and strong foundation of not only the guitar but music in general.

Initially, I must get to know to know my students' current musical background and if they are familiar with playing guitar already. If they are not, then I start with most of the nomenclature and memorization of the guitar, the strings, how to hold it, how to hold a pick, which fingers to use in order to pluck the strings, and more. If my students have an existing background in guitar and music, I often find myself filling in the gaps their previous knowledge/teacher left out.
