Ruthanne Neveu
About
Ruthanne is a dedicated musician and educator who is passionate about guiding students through their unique musical journeys. She has studied and practiced the viola under master musicians at San Jacinto College and the University of Texas at Brownsville, where she served as principal violist at both institutions throughout her academic career while earning her degrees. Although her primary focus is on the viola and violin, her musical abilities extend well beyond these instruments.
Through regular performances in chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras, Ruthanne continues to refine her expertise in music theory and ensemble collaboration. She also maintains an active practice in songwriting, which keeps her skills sharp on rhythm guitar, ukulele, and piano. Currently, she is furthering her musical education at Sam Houston State University as a student of Music Therapy, expanding her understanding of music’s ability to support emotional and physical well-being as well as personal growth.
Ruthanne firmly believes that music—whether pursued as a hobby, a passion, or a source of comfort—should be accessible to everyone, not just a select few. In a time when the cost of music education continues to rise and instruction can sometimes feel high-pressure or overly critical, she strives to create a learning environment that is both welcoming and encouraging. Her goal is to keep lessons affordable so that students from diverse backgrounds can experience the benefits of music education, while also ensuring that each lesson remains enjoyable and motivating.
With more than 18 years of teaching experience, Ruthanne brings both expertise and enthusiasm to every lesson. She emphasizes positive reinforcement, helping students recognize what they are doing well while offering supportive guidance on how they can continue to improve. Sharing her love and knowledge of music with others remains one of her greatest joys, and she continues to approach every student and every lesson with genuine passion and dedication.
Teaching Style
My teaching approach is centered on tailoring each lesson to the individual needs and goals of every student. I believe that effective learning happens when students feel engaged, supported, and excited about the instrument they are playing. For that reason, I strive to create lessons that are both structured and enjoyable, allowing students to build their skills while developing a genuine appreciation for music. Above all, I emphasize active playing during lessons, as the most effective way to learn an instrument is simply to play it. By creating a positive and encouraging virtual learning environment, students gain confidence, strengthen their abilities, and develop a lasting connection with music. 🎶
Curriculum
My teaching approach is adaptable and tailored to meet the unique needs of each student. I recognize that every learner has a different background, learning style, and set of goals, so I design lessons that best support their individual development. A trial lesson is highly recommended, as it allows me to assess the student’s musical experience and become familiar with their abilities and interests. During this time, I can also recommend an appropriate method or curriculum if one has not already been established by a previous instructor.
I bring a wide range of teaching experience and instructional resources to my lessons, working with students at many different levels. My background includes preparing advanced college students for auditions, guiding adult beginners, and teaching young learners with varying degrees of musical exposure—from complete beginners to exceptionally gifted children as young as four years old. Regardless of a student’s starting point, my goal is to create a learning environment that keeps music engaging, enjoyable, and inspiring. 🎶
