About

Hey Everyone!! My name is Samuel Ellibee and I am currently going into my 4th year at Central Washington University as an Oboe Performance Major and Instrumental Music Education Major. I have been playing oboe for 10 years. I have performed at numerous competitions state wide, and have also traveled to Europe in 2015 with the Oregon Ambassadors of Music honor band. In my college career, I have played in the CWU Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra as principal under the direction of Lewis Norfleet and Dr. Nikolas Caoile.  I have plans on getting my Masters degree in Oboe Performance as well once I graduate Central Washington University. If you would like to read more about my musical performances, I have attached my résumé. My current professor for oboe at Central Washington University is Dr. Scott Erickson.

I love going outside and being with people. I am pretty extroverted and very passionate about teaching oboe but, music in general. I am very driven towards success and I definitely want to see that in my students. When I am not performing at school or other competitions outside of college, I am usually hiking, learning new instruments, or hanging out with friends.

I graduated from Burns High School a small school in Burns, OR. I did not live very close to the outside world. I grew up my whole life in that town so I am very familiar with the Pacific Northwest.

Some of my favorite oboe rep is: R. Vaughan Williams Concerto, Strauss Concerto, Mozart Concerto, Fantasie Pastorale by Bozza, and the Hindemith Sonata (to name a few).

Favorite Symphony works: Mahler 2 & 3, Tchaikovsky 4 & 6, Daphnis et Chloé by Ravel, Bruckner 8th, Pictures at an Exhibition, and New World Symphony.

As a teacher, I want to see the same amount of effort from my students as I will give to them. I would be considered a very "tough love" kind of person but, with a very big heart. My oboe teacher in high school, Dr. Amy Goeser Kolb, gave me the ability to be tough on myself as a player. I want to see my students with serious intent to be successful. At the end of the day, we really do have to ask ourselves if we are doing lessons for ourselves? Or are we doing lessons because our parents want us to do them? I hope that my students will be excited to come into their lessons with full engagement. When it comes to student feedback, I would consider myself to be pretty tough although, I want to see my students succeed so I believe telling my students the truth is the most important part. Being honest from the beginning helps create the bond between a student and teacher. I do believe there is such a thing as positive student feedback. I do not believe in negative feedback, rather I would consider it constructive. One of my biggest things I cannot stress enough on is believing in my students. Regardless of how tough a teacher is, I think believing that the student is even able to do it is crucial. When my students work with me, I hope they can lean on me if they need too. I consider myself as a safe space for LGBTQ+ students as well. As a teacher, I firmly believe that whatever the student is passionate about, be passionate about it with them. Some students I have had in the past do not come from the greatest homes and I want them to feel safe with me.

Recommended Student Texts for Lessons are attached in the files.

My teachers--
Debbie and Ken Peckham from Burns, OR
Dr. Amy Goeser Kolb from Bend, OR
Currently I am studying with Dr. Scott Erickson

For Lessons, we will decide what books are good if that is the direction we are wanting to go. I typically will recommend that every student will need the "Old" version of the Barret Etude Book and the David Hite Scale book.
