About

I’ve been performing music since I was about 5 years old. I grew up singing gospel music and hymns at church in a family band. Between the ages of 12 to 18, I performed professionally in a bluegrass band where we played for nursing homes, in theaters, and competed at music festivals.

Since then, I began attending ETSU where I’ve had the opportunity to be around some of the best in the business. I began learning to play the upright bass from Clint Mullican (from Mandolin Orange) and Danny Stewart. I played in a band and took mandolin from Adam Steffey, and took fiddle from Hunter Berry. I learned all about music theory, chart writing, and even to read music when I played bass in a mandolin orchestra for a semester!

This past year, 2020, I had the opportunity to play bass on stage at Dollywoods “Harvest Festival” in TN for the month of October. My band and I, “Joshua Gooding & the Tennessee Ramblers,” as we called ourselves for that occasion, performed from 9-5 with 4 sets a day for a live audience who greatly appreciated the music. In addition, I also had the pleasure of playing frequently at Jayell Ranch in Sevierville, TN near Gatlinburg.

Today, I continue to have the opportunity to play and perform with some of the best in the business frequently and have learned so much through the years. To say that I’ve been pushed musically to improve through these last few years would be an understatement. Playing the bass is one of my absolute favorite things to do, and one of the only things I like better than playing it, is teaching others what I’ve learned and attempting to guide them on their own unique journey.

I love to teach students of ages, backgrounds, and experiences! Every single lesson I teach, I cater specifically to the individual student and where they are in their journey. I also always try to move at the particular pace of the student - making sure they don't feel rushed at all, or bored and unchallenged. I try to break things down as easy as I can to make even the most complicated things seem simple and understandable to the learner.
