About

Jazz and rock guitarist Scott Burton loves teaching kids and adults, beginners and beyond, how to play and how to listen. He loves helping people discover new sounds and new ways of approaching music, all while learning fundamentals and songs they have a personal interest in.

Since graduating college, Scott has been leading his own projects, including Glows in the Dark, Standards and Practices, Kessel Quartet, and worked behind the scenes as an organizer setting up shows for jazz and experimental musicians like Mary Halvorson, John Hollenbeck and Ken Vandermark.  In Glows in the Dark, Scott composed and arranged all the music, which led to collaborations with saxophonist Matana Roberts, producer Jneiro Jarel, and emcee Count Bass D among many others. He's also written and recorded music for short films, documentaries and podcasts.

Over many years of private instruction, Scott has developed a way of teaching students from beginner to advanced by listening to each student and creating a plan just for them. He particularly enjoys introducing children to the guitar, and helping them learn through musical games and by using their favorite songs to help. He also loves helping adults break through, and learn how to read music and how to understand the guitar. So many guitarists grow up learning pieces of the puzzle, but not how they fit together. Scott can help piece together things students already understand, and show them how it all fits together to give a better understanding of the instrument.

Jazz and improvised music are Scott's passions, and he specializes in teaching these things, and helping students get over fears of improvising and 'soloing'. He uses very basic scales to help get the interested student improvising fast. He will take cues from each student to help them expand their own improvising vocabulary on their own terms. His goal is to empower each student to feel confident on whatever bandstand they find themselves on.

In addition to guitar, Scott can also guide students who are interested in learning more about modular synthesis. Over the past 7 years he has taken the dive into the world of Eurorack and modular synths and through much trial and error has learned how to navigate all the new devices through an understanding of sound fundamentals.
