Scott’s teaching style is student-centered and song-centered.

By the end of each lesson, students will have at least one song to play and practice which is appropriate to his/her level.

Being able to immediately play a song or simple tune is the key to long-term success on the guitar. The process of learning must be enjoyable at each step, or discouragement and frustration may develop.

Scott’s primary focus is on ensuring that the excitement of accomplishment is built into every lesson.

Scott's Teaching Philosophy:  skills, technique, and knowledge are learned through playing music.

Beginners - Traditional Track*

Stage 1 - Single Note Playing

Goal: To play popular songs using tablature notation (TAB).

Students will develop their right and left hand technique by playing popular songs using TAB notation. All of the first position notes (first four frets) will be used starting with string one and adding successive strings. By the end of stage one, students will have a variety of songs to play for their enjoyment.

Stage 2 - Chord Playing

Goal: To play basic open position chords using chord diagrams and chord lead sheets.

Students will learn to play chord changes to popular songs using chord diagrams and chord lead sheets. Also, basic strumming patterns will be introduced at this stage. By the end of stage two, students will be able to play the chords that accompany the songs in stage one or sing and accompany themselves.

Beginners - Rock Track*

Stage 1 - Lead Guitar

Goal: To play basic rock riffs using tablature notation (TAB).

Students will learn single string rock riffs and progress to more complex riffs. (The riff, or brief melodic statement, is the “back-bone” of most rock songs.) Students will learn how to read TAB notation and be able to play a repertoire of recognizable classic rock riffs. The “lead” scale will also be introduced at this stage.

Stage 2 - Rhythm Guitar

Goal: To play standard and Drop-D power chords using TAB.

Students will learn how to play standard power chords as well as Drop-D power chords to a variety of well known classic rock songs. Basic fretboard identification skills will also be introduced during this stage as an introduction to guitar music theory.
