About
I have been teaching piano, trumpet and other brass instruments for 15 years to students of all ages and skill levels. I have been playing piano for most of my life. I am classical trained but play rock, jazz, blues/gospel and pop styles. I have played in many weddings, small ensembles, rock/pop bands and accompanied various artists throughout my piano performing career.
In 2005, I received a Bachelor of Arts in Music in trumpet performance from Trinity Western University (TWU) in Langley, BC, Canada. Since then I have played prinicipal trumpet in the TWU Orchestra, on-call trumpet player for the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra, Bruce James Orchestra and resident play for 7 years for the Moonliters Big Band. I have played for various dixieland jazz groups such as the Jenn Hodge All Stars, First Avenue Hot Six and various other groups. In 2012, I received a music teaching degree from University of British Columbia and I am currently a band and elementary music classroom teacher.
Teaching Style
I want my students to learn their instrument well and feel good about it every lesson. I have prepared students for university auditions, Royal Conservatory exams and recitals. I have also taught beginning band students how to become better at their instrument so they can be successful in school band. Overall, I have high but reasonable expectations for my students. I always find something that my students can relate to (music, stories, etc.) to help them learn and advance on their instrument so they can have a fun and positive lesson time.
