Sophie Thompson
About
Hello, I'm Sophie. I am a classically trained singer from New Jersey, currently residing in the New York Metro Area. I have been singing for over ten years and hold degrees in Vocal Performance and Repertoire from the Eastman School of Music, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Westminster Conservatory. I specialize in classical vocal technique, art song, and opera, but I also sing jazz, musical theatre, and choral music. Language is another one of my passions. I received a German studies certificate in my undergraduate degree and spent two summers in Germany, studying German. I also offer diction coaching in German, French, Italian, and English, in addition to vocal training.
Teaching Style
Taking lessons builds confidence in your voice and posture, whether you sing in a choir or are preparing for an audition. Voice lessons can also improve body posture, public speaking, and breath control. As a teacher, I incorporate vocal techniques with movements that you perform in your everyday life, i.e., soccer, tennis, running, or yoga. I aim to help my students sing the music they love with ease and confidence in a supportive environment while cultivating musicianship and acting skills.
I offer a free 30-minute sample lesson/consultation for all new students.
Curriculum
Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, I am only teaching lessons remotely. For lessons, I recommend that students have a mirror (full body preferred), a chair, and a little bit of floor space. I require that all students have a lesson journal to take notes on exercises, new vocal discoveries, repertoire ideas, and a practice log to keep track of progress. With lessons, you get out what you put in!
Credentials & Affiliations
I took courses in vocal pedagogy training and applied pedagogy in my undergraduate and master's programs. During my time at the Eastman School of Music, I taught voice to non-majors in the school. At Carnegie Mellon University, I was the Teaching Assistant for the German Diction course for two years. I taught lesson plans, graded papers, and tutored students privately. I have worked with other musicians, high school students, and athletes.
