Thomas Howerton
About
Greetings,
My name is Tom and I'm a Classically trained violist. My main teachers that I've had the pleasure of working with are Sheila Browne and Karen Ritscher. I'm also an Advocate for the Karen Tuttle Coordination Technique.
For High-School, I attended UNC School of the Arts and Manhattan School of Music for college. Afterwards, I became Principal Violist Raleigh Symphony as well as play in other symphonies in the NC region.
Whether you're looking to begin your journey with viola or you need a new ear for your College Prescreenings, I can help you meet your goals. I've had opportunities and experience teaching all ages and levels, so let's get started!
Teaching Style
Playing viola shouldn't be a strain on our bodies or a painful experience; and luckily it doesn't have to be. By passing down what I've gained from my teachers, I tailor to the needs of each student by physical setup, (shoulder rest, padding, etc) utilizing our natural bodies for what they have to offer when playing, and assessing fingerings, intonation, tone, posture, alignment, etc. I'm naturally a supportive and encouraging person, but also willing to be precise in giving instruction on what a student needs to get to meet their goals.
