Thomas Newman
About
I began flute at ten years of age and have now played for 62 years. My love of flute and music led me to earn my Bachelors of Music Education from East Carolina University and Master of Flute Performance from Radford University. I have been fortunate to study with students of the great William Kincaid, such as Melvin Flood and Dr. Norman Todenhoft. I have met many of our contemporary flutists at Flute Fairs and concerts from Boston to Columbia, S.C. and Bloomington, Indiana. I love to share flute playing and music through my teaching. I have taught from elementary to college level music in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. I take pride in the accomplishments and awards of my students and the excitement they develop for flute and music. I still perform professionally in small ensembles and chamber orchestra.
Teaching Style
I love to help the student excel in mastery of the flute and music theory with easy methods for developing technique and solving problems. Though I work in pop forms of music, I enjoy helping the student learn how to play or understand the theory of Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary styles. They build confidence as they are shown how to succeed.
Curriculum
My curriculum is built from presenting basic musical ideas and continue adding to these until higher levels are achieved. It is important at the beginning to find at what level the student is and build from there.
