Thushara Deepal

I am Thushara Deepal, a passionate and dedicated music educator and performer with a rich background in Indian, Arabic, and Asian music traditions. I am skilled in playing classical guitar, flamenco guitar, and singing classical, jazz, and pop music. Additionally, I am proficient with Indian instruments and music, modern music improvisation, and Sri Lankan folk music. As a composer and music engineer, I bring a comprehensive understanding of various musical styles and techniques.
With over 12 years of teaching experience, I have successfully connected with students from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Sri Lanka, India, Philippine, Pakistan, Syria, Iran, Iraq, UAE, and China. This multicultural perspective allows me to design personalized lessons that are both relatable and effective.
I am committed to continuous learning and professional growth, actively participating in group performances and exploring new areas such as conducting and composing music. I am also involved in innovative projects, including developing a Solfège reading app and managing multiple YouTube channels to share my expertise and passion for music.

My vision is to inspire and educate future generations of musicians and learners through innovative, research-based teaching methods that foster motivation, creativity, and critical thinking. Using Self-Determination Theory (SDT), I aim to develop the autonomy, competence, and connectedness of my students, enabling them to discover their unique musical voices while incorporating a sense of enjoyment, tolerance, and flexibility into the learning process.

 By using Van Gelder's Model of Didactic Analysis (MDA), I create interactive and adaptable learning environments that combine subject matter, pedagogy, and the needs of varied learners. My approach to teaching is aligned with Piaget's cognitive development theory, where I encourage exploration and hands-on learning to promote meaningful growth in students' developmental stages. Incorporating Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, I emphasize collaborative learning and the role of social interaction, creating opportunities for students to learn from peers and mentors while developing a deep appreciation for the cultural and historical contexts of music. My goal is to continually improve my skills as an educator and musician by committing to lifelong learning and reflective practice. I aim to bridge cultural gaps and promote unity by contributing to the global arts community through the universal language of music.
