About

ABOUT ME
Appearing extensively throughout New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, trumpeter Dr. Thomas Boulton maintains a very active performance calendar and has performed with the New York Philharmonic, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Princeton Symphony, NOVUS NY of Trinity Wall Street, Metropolis Ensemble, Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, Allentown Symphony Orchestra, Reading Symphony Orchestra, Hartford Symphony (CT), the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, and numerous other large and small ensembles in the northeastern United States.  Tom currently serves as Principal Trumpet of Chamber Orchestra of New York, a position he has held since 2014.  As a freelance musician based in New York City, he has performed alongside distinguished members of the Canadian Brass and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and makes regular appearances at prestigious concert halls including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.  Tom's trumpet playing has been broadcast live on television to over 200 million homes internationally, heard on numerous National Public Radio programs, and on live concert stages in front of crowds exceeding 25,000.

As an educator, clinician, and recitalist, Tom appears at schools and universities across the country and is a published author in the International Trumpet Guild Journal.  A strong advocate for music in schools and a proponent of Aesthetic Education - “Dr. Tom” as he is fondly known - served seven years as a New York Philharmonic Teaching Artist where he designed, collaborated, and presented interactive chamber music tours and taught orchestral music to over 2,000 students in New York City classrooms.  He was appointed as Adjunct Professor of Trumpet at Kean University (New Jersey) in 2018 where he currently teaches music education and trumpet performance majors.

WHAT TO EXPECT
My teaching philosophy revolves around equipping students with the essential tools to become self-sufficient learners, even after our sessions conclude.  Recognizing that each individual learns and progresses uniquely, I tailor my approach to meet you at your current level while maintaining the overarching goal of fostering self-guided learning.  This may involve offering personalized exercises, warm-ups, and practice routines, as well as addressing psychological barriers to enhance confidence and growth.  Ultimately, my aim is to empower you to continue your musical journey independently, whether it's weeks or years down the line.

Graduate of Mason Gross School of the Arts-Rutgers University (Doctor of Musical Arts), Manhattan School of Music (Master of Music), and Eastern Michigan University (Bachelor of Music).  Affiliated with New York Philharmonic as an educational consultant and former Philharmonic Teaching Artist.

Principal teachers include Kevin Cobb, Thomas V. Smith, Carter Eggers, and Michael Bowman.  Additional individual instruction from trumpeting icons Håkan Hardenberger, Thomas Stevens, Gabriele Cassone, Stephen Burns, Edward Carroll, Jim Ross, Mark Gould, David Krauss, Peter Bond, Brian McWhorter, Ray Mase, and Robert Sullivan.  Tom has performed under notable conductors such as Charles Dutoit, Alan Gilbert, Marin Alsop, Lorin Maazel, and Kurt Masur.  Recorded on the Sony Classical, Mark Masters, and Naxos Classical labels.

Method books, exercises, and routines will be suggested to align with your goals, needs, and preferred style of learning after an initial consultation/assessment.
