I stand on the shoulders of giants. I've studied with the late Bill Adam and several of his students, most notably Karl Sievers of Oklahoma State University and John Carroll of The San Antonio Symphony. Solid basics of breathing, tone production and finger technique are the keys to greatness. Everything else is icing on the cake. And since performing is why we're all here we'll include stage presence, overcoming performance anxiety and knowing how to relate to the audience.
I graduated high school and wanted to perform rather than study so I spent the next 15 years in the Air Force band system. Traveled most of the US states and a couple dozen countries. I've worked with the great and the near great and always been an eager student. Since then I've played out with every kind of band and in every genre you can name. I'm currently working a single as Unified Lounge Theory playing Ella, Frank and Dino sprinkled with Lady Gaga and Madonna. It's so much fun I can't believe I get paid for it.
This depends on what the student wants to learn. Of course, any pieces the student wants to play are at the top of the list. Everybody needs to learn opulent tone production and I like Pat Harbison's Trumpetology for that. For concert or "legit" St Jacome, Longinotti and Caffarelli are classic. More contemporary studies include jazz etudes by Sy Platt and Paul Nagle.
